Zelle® FAQs

You can send money to people you know and trust with a bank account in the U.S. We recommend that you ask your recipient to enroll with Zelle® in their mobile banking app before you send them money - this will help them get your payment more quickly.

If you don't know the person or aren't sure you will get what you paid for (example - items bought from an online bidding or sales site), you should not use Zelle®. These transactions are potentially high risk (just like sending cash to a person you don't know is high risk). Neither Comerica Bank or Zelle® offers purchase protection for payments made with Zelle® (example - if you do not receive the item you paid for or the item is not as described or as you expected.

Money sent with Zelle® is typically available to an enrolled recipient within minutes. Ask your recipient to enroll with Zelle® before you send them money - this will help them get your payment more quickly. If you send money to someone who isn’t enrolled with Zelle®, they will receive a payment notification prompting them to enroll with Zelle®. After your recipient enrolls, it may take between 1 to 3 business days for your recipient to receive that payment in their bank account.

Comerica Bank does not charge any fees to use Zelle®.

Keeping your money and information safe is a top priority for Comerica. When you use Zelle® within our online banking or mobile app, your information is protected with the same technology we use to keep your Comerica account safe. When you Send Money with Zelle® in the Comerica mobile app or online banking, a one-time passcode (OTP) request is required to help protect your security. These SMS (text) or email messages will contain:

  • Comerica Bank
  • Instructions not to share the OTP
  • Confirmation that the OTP is exclusive to Zelle®
  • Assurance that we will never request the code via call or text

In order to use Zelle®, the recipient must be able to receive money into a bank account in the U.S.

Zelle® is a great way to send money to family, friends and people that you are familiar with such as your personal trainer, babysitter or neighbor1. If you don’t know the person, or aren’t sure you will get what you paid for, we recommend you do not use Zelle® for these types of transactions.

To learn more about Zelle®, contact a Comerica representative at 888-444-9876.

You can only cancel a payment if the person you sent money to hasn't yet enrolled with Zelle®. To check whether the payment is still pending because the recipient hasn't yet enrolled, you can go to your activity page, choose the payment you want to cancel, and select "Cancel this payment". If you do not see this option available, please contact our customer a Comerica representative at 888.444.9876 for assistance with cancelling the pending payment.
If the person you sent money to has already enrolled with Zelle®, the money is sent directly to their bank account and cannot be canceled. This is why it's important to only send money to people you trust, and always ensure you've used the correct email address or U.S. mobile number when sending money.
If you sent money to the wrong person, please immediately call a Comerica representative at 888.444.9876 so we can assist you.

Find Zelle® in the Comerica Mobile Banking app, click “Send”, then click on the QR code icon displayed at the top of the “Select Recipient” screen. Your phone’s camera will open up. To send money using a Zelle® QR code, you simply point your camera at the recipient’s Zelle® QR code, enter the amount, hit “Send”, and the money is on the way!

To receive money, you can locate your own Zelle® QR code by clicking the “My Code” tab. From there you can view your QR code and use the print and share icons to text, email or print their Zelle® QR code.

No, each Zelle® QR code is specific to an individual U.S. mobile number or email address. If you change the U.S. mobile number or email address, the Zelle® QR code will change. You must share your new Zelle® QR code to receive money.

Money sent to a Zelle® QR code that is not associated with an enrolled U.S. mobile number or email address will be set as “Pending” and the money will not move into your bank account unless you re-enroll the U.S. mobile number or email address associated with the QR code. If you do not re-enroll the U.S. mobile number or email address previously associated with that Zelle® QR code, the payment will expire after 14 days. If they no longer have access to the mobile number or email address, the sender should cancel the payment and send money using the new Zelle® QR code.
